Experimentation
To develop this stage, I experimented with several methods of manipulating the spotlights and other light sources in the camera.
Blurred window
For this experiment, I used a blurred window at the top of my stairs and saw how the lights coming from outside were manipulated
Filter
Next, I tried using a filter for the camera lens that acts similar to how sunglasses work
Non-Filter

Filter

Food Bag
For this, I covered my lens with a translucent food bag and discovered how that manipulated the light

Breath blur
For this, I simply breathed on my camera lens to fog it up and then saw how that affected the lights ability to appear straightforward on the camera
Water droplets
Similar to the work of Naoya Hatakeyama, as highlighted above, I wanted to experiment with water. To do this, I ran my hand under water and gently placed droplets of water on the lens and then photographed a spotlight.
Video
Finally, I wanted to use video to manipulate light, as camera focus on video differs depending on lighting. For this experiment, I attempted to create a pinhole camera, as demonstrated below. I then took videos of the same water feature photographed above to see how the light and shapes around it would act in the camera in relatively dark conditions.

(raw video)

Dissatisfied with the outcome of the raw footage I decided to edit a couple. For the first one, I simply increased the brightness of the video to see how that changed it.

Still not entirely satisfied, I tried using a filter. In iMovie, there is an option called 'Auto' which I tried using, as shown below along with the result. I also decreased the shakiness of the video to keep it focused on the light.
